| Academic
programs with majors in geology are available leading to either
a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. |
| The
Bachelor of Arts program is ordinarily
selected by students who wish to combine geology with another
career. For example, combinations with economics or business
have proven quite practical. Students have also successfully
combined geological training with skills from art, foreign language
and English for work in graphics and publishing. |
| The
Bachelor of Science program is followed
by students planning for a professional career or graduate study
in geology. It includes a core curriculum in geology and allied
sciences. Within this major students have the opportunity to
focus in environmental geology, geochemistry, geophysics or paleobiology. |
| The
Bachelor of Science program provides preparation for a varied
choice of professional careers in geology. However, to qualify
for a much broader range of employment possibilities, many students
elect to complete a Master of Science degree. The master's program
provides a higher level of job entry skills that are widely
considered to be essential for a career as a professional geologist. |
| For
students interested in teaching earth science at the high school
level, a program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Education
is available through the College
of Education and Allied Professions. |
