Research in Quaternary geology and geomorphology includes studies of Earth's recent climate history, landform genesis, and surficial processes and deposits. Knowledge of surficial processes and deposits, because of their involvement with human activities, is particularly relevant to various aspects of environmental geology. Studies of Quaternary climate history improve our understanding of present earth systems and climate change. Such research is inherently interdisciplinary, involving for example hydrology, geochemistry, remote sensing, soil science, climatology, and biology.
Quaternary geology and geomorphology research at BGSU has included projects in Ohio, around the world, and on other planets. Northwest Ohio is an excellent location to study features of glacial erosion and deposition and modern coastal processes of the Lake Erie shoreline. Local research projects have involved collaborations with the Ohio Geological Survey, the US Geological Survey, and various other agencies.
Some recent research at BGSU includes:
· mapping and analysis of glacial deposits in three dimensions
· reconstructing glaciation history of the Russian Arctic
· paleoenvironmental interpretation of lake-sediment cores
· studies of deglaciation history related to ancestral Lake Erie and tributary rivers, and to the ecology of Lake Erie
· origin of beach ridges on Catawba Island
· assessment of longshore drift processes in Lake Erie
· analysis of mass wasting processes in glacial till bluffs along Lake Erie
· relationship of surficial features to bedrock structure
· origin and hydrogeology of the Oak Openings Sand Belt
· depositional setting of ice-contact deltas
· Holocene evolution of Lake Erie coastal wetlands and estuaries
· soil erosion rates and processes
· planetary geomorphology and comparative landscape development
