Geochemistry is the application of chemical problems to solve geologic problems. Students choosing a Bachelor of Science degree in geology with a specialization in geochemistry study the chemistry of rocks, minerals, fossils and other earth materials to better understand the geology of an area.
Students choosing a specialization in geochemistry study a core curriculum of geology courses augmented by courses in chemistry. This training prepares students for employment in the environmental industries, metallic and nonmetallic mining, federal and state geological surveys, university teaching and related fields where knowledge of both chemistry and geology is needed. Concern for the quality of the environment provides career opportunities in the areas of water

quality, waste disposal, and clean up of sites contaminated with hazardous material. The demand for energy and mineral resources provides employment opportunities in the coal, petroleum and mineral industries.
The Bachelor of Science degree in geology with a specialization in geochemistry provides students with the tools necessary for employment in a variety of career paths. However, many students elect to complete a Master of Science degree to qualify for an even broader range of employment opportunities.
